Restaurants are going all out to woo diners by offering big discounts, value-for-money buffets and cheaper menu options By Huang LiJie
“When news broke last month that Singapore had sunk into a recession, Persimmon restaurant in Tiong Bahru felt the bite at once — 8 of its 10 reservations cancelled that night. The owner of the 88-seat restaurant, Ms. Sharon Lim, 40 says: “People have got over over the initial shock but business is still down…”
Persimmon’s response to Singapore’s hard times is an “a-la-carte buffet” menu for lunch and dinner, which features most of its signature “modern Singaporean” dishes. The price of $20 for lunch and $25 for dinner includes service charge and GST, and is a real value-for-money deal.
“Singaporeans like to try different types of food during a meal, and our a-la-carte buffet offering has the advantage of satisfying this love for variety. Plus, customers get to order until they are song (Hokkien for fully satisfied)”
